Compostability Test Facility

Biodegradation and disintegration of plastics and wool fibres in compost, activated vermiculite and aquatic environments. The facility operates to multiple globally recognised standards and is the only DIN-CERTCO-accredited testing facility in Australasia. We tailor the composting of newly developed biomaterials, and this service is available to commercial clients who are seeking evidence to support environmental marketing claims. The facility can quantify the aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials by measuring the evolved carbon dioxide. It can also be used to examine the degradation of plastic, paper or wood in media, such as soil or aquatic environments, and to investigate whether additives impede or accelerate composting of a biomaterial.

Scion specialises in additive manufacturing using biomaterials including bio-derived or bio-sourced, biodegradable and compostable materials. Our facility can handle bio-feedstocks from liquids, gels, solids (e.g. polymers, powders), and create new prototypes using sustainable innovative materials. 4D printing is the capacity of a 3D printed object to change over time or to possess an added functionality, such as shape memory ability or conductivity.
